MAMAN WOMEN || Clare van den Berg

If you love a top-level dining experience in Auckland, chances are you have been to one of Clare and Joost van den Bergs restaurants.  From the iconic Odettes Eatery to Hugo’s Bistro, Zus & Zo through to their latest venture, Daphne’s Taverna in Ponsonby, this talented husband and wife duo continuously raise the bar in the hospitality scene.

Here at Maman we have long been inspired by Clare as a restaurateur, interior designer and mother.   Her impeccable curation of spaces across hospitality, commercial and residential amaze us with their uniqueness and charm. Clare’s ability to combine textures, timelessness and luxury into a space has us in awe at every turn.  No more so than at Daphnes Taverna, a modern Greek Bar Taverna recently opened in the heart of Ponsonby.

As a Mum of two, Harvey Rush (6) and Marni Rae (1), Clare seamlessly moves between managing family life with her current businesses and future ventures.  Truly a family woman, it is no surprise that her support network is her dearest and nearest who constantly support her with love, wisdom and the odd school pick up!

The Maman team visited Clare at Daphne’s on its third day of opening and were privileged to shoot Clare in all her working mum, business owner, interior designer glory!   Clare’s ability to juggle everything so calmly and thoughtfully is inspiring to watch.  We truly believe it is as much Clare’s personality as the beautiful hospitality experiences she creates that have people coming back time and time again.

A day in the life of Clare looks like:
I wake up at 7am. Mornings are busy getting Harvey ready for school with breakfast and making school lunches. I am always chasing time and feeding Marni breakfast in between. Harvey leaves for school on the Vespa with Joost at 8.30am, and I put Marni back to bed at 9am, have a quick shower then off to work. I split my days working at the office, restaurant and working in between Marni's sleeps. I would love to say I am doing my Fluid Form Pilates or SALA every morning... trying to make it more regular!!!

My inside make-up baobao bag with all my favourite bits in it, including Cars lipstick and Hourglass lipgloss. Weekly diary from 'an organised life', baby wipes, sanitizer and my phone! I always have a floral tape measurer-that way no one takes it!

What's one thing you can't live without:
My family of course. My husband Joost, my son Harvey Rush, daughter Marni Rae and my mum Anna.

Here at Maman we are about beautiful pieces that last a long time. What is the most precious thing in your wardrobe:
My wedding dress, it is special. Galliano... the most beautiful love at first sight piece in my wardrobe. I really did see it from a window, tried it on and that was the dress (the only one I tried on!) I hope my daughter may like to wear it one day.

Also my engagement ring. I fall more and more in love with it all the time.

Most coveted fashion item right now:
My leopard Emilia Wickstead coat.

What's the biggest fashion mistake you've ever made:
A black sequinned ball gown with a long split up one side. It was Bling Bling!!

What are you doing for the rest of the day:
Spending it with my children, Harvey and Marni. I am stripping back and painting a small highchair I got for Marni for her dollies from Junk & Disorderly, one of my faves!

Current song on rotate:
The Fall by Rhys, as it reminds me of a friend I miss dearly every day. Also Unknown by Saschienne or anything Michael Kiwanuka.

Are you a 'wish list' or and 'add to cart' kind of girl:
Add to cart...eeekk!.

Beautiful white roses my mum put in a vase for me today. I sent her a photo to say thank you.

Best compliment you have ever received:
My dad always used to tell me how unique I was... it will always stay with me.

Bradley Cooper (it's a bit of a joke in our household).

Favourite quote or saying:
'What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us' - Helen Keller.

Maman is all about family and celebrating women. What is the best advice your mum has ever given you:
From a young age she constantly told me 'put on eye cream every night before bed'. She has amazing skin!

Perfect Holiday Destination:
Paros, Greece! And of course going back to Amsterdam and Joost's family house a couple of hours outside of Paris, France. Can't wait to return, when we can again ...

Two years ago we also had an incredibly memorable trip with very special friends to Ponza, Italy. I will always hold this trip close to me.

Last words:
Tomorrow is another day. My mum always has to remind of this as I try and pack 101 things into my day, with lists galore. I love a good list!!!
