Maman x Michelle Wilkin

"SMALL WORLD is a series of abstract minimalism original fine artworks inspired by the evocative effects of our ever-changing natural world. 

Each piece within the series is titled after a city or geographical region that is close to my heart. Whether it be somewhere I feel a kinship towards, or a place I once visited and has long left a lasting impression upon my soul, these sentiments and memories have now made their way to the canvas.

I have always loved to travel and have been fortunate to live overseas for a long period of my adult life. Throughout this time my eyes were cast wide to the spectrum of natural colours the world provides us every day, by way of its landscape, as well as the inherent beauty and culture of the people and places that call it home. 

I chose to use raw unprimed natural canvas for this series as it acts like a sponge and absorbs the paint. Not only does this desaturate the colour creating a more realistic hue, but it blends the paints more naturally, soaking into the canvas to create a softer, more nostalgic finish, resembling the changing ombré lighting effect we are drawn to each day.

Created to embody the feeling of each of its namesakes, this body of work is more than just an ode to the beauty of the rising and setting sun and moon, it is a test of our senses. It employs the viewer to reminisce, to revisit the tastes, smells, sights and sounds that make up their cumulative experience of a place. 

As visitors we each experience travel in our own unique way, but collectively the overlap is rich with emotion. It is in this mutual retrospective that we see how small this world actually is."
